7/12/09 -- Free Day; St. Marks, Transfer to Paris

So today was another free day in Venice. We slept in and then Julia and I went on a nice run around the city for the last time. We left the hotel about 11 and Ashley, Michelle, Julia and I stopped and sketched one of the bridges. Part of our assignments here in Europe is to have atleast 30 sketches amongst other projects. After we sketched we walked around aimlessly until St. Marks opened. We got to St. Marks and we waited in line for abou twenty minutes. When I got up to the entrance this mean Italian man told me I couldn't have my backpack and that I had to go check it. But he didn't speak any english so I had know idea where to check it. It took Lyndsey and I forever to find the stupid place. The language barrier can get a little tricky sometimes.
We finally got into St. Marks. It has some of the greatest mosaics in all of the world and is Venice's most famous cathdral. It was very pretty on the outside, but I thought that the inside was very dark and dreary and you couldn't really see the mosaics. I still liked it a lot though. We stayed for about an hour and sketched some details inside the church
After St. Marks we did a little bit more shopping, grabbed a bite to eat, and then headed off to the train station to meet the group. We took the overnight train to Paris. We were all cramped in the tiniest space. All the luggage had to go in overhead compartments and then the seats pulled down into bunk beds. It all kind of reminded me of the Hogwarts Express, but after the magic faded it was miserable! Ha really hot and stuffy and I got stuck with the bottom bunk because I'm terrible and rock, paper, scissors. I battled Julia and lost. We stayed up a little while talking and then tried to get some sleep. I really didn't sleep at all and I don't think anyone else did much either. Ha but we finally got to Paris and that was a relief.
